About the fund

Hannah Gray Home is a 20-bed licensed residential care home that provides supervised care and supportive services to indigent elderly individuals in the Dixwell and Greater New Haven communities. The Home was founded in 1861 when Hannah Gray, an African-American seamstress, bequeathed her home for the benefit of elderly women of color. Today, the Home serves indigent elderly individuals without regard to race or gender. These individuals are exclusively residents of Connecticut, and primarily residents of New Haven, who would otherwise be cared for by the State as they do not have sufficient independent resources. The Home aims to foster an environment in which residents feel connected to each other and to the cultural and spiritual roots of their community during the transition period in which they cannot live independently but do not yet need a nursing home or hospice level of care. The mission of Hannah Gray Home is to provide its residents with supportive services to enhance independence, dignity and choice. As a residential care home (RCH), Hannah Gray provides a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and care designed to respond to the individual needs of those who require a little more help with their activities of daily living (ADLs), but who do not need the skilled medical or nursing care provided in a nursing home. The Hannah Gray staff offer help with ADLs while encouraging residents to remain as independent as they can be, for as long as possible. They promote the involvement of a resident’s family and friends and encourage a home-like environment so that each resident can maintain their privacy and dignity, all while living in a community setting. Residents living in RCHs are often able to prevent many of the problems associated with living alone, such as illness resulting from poor diet, depression, and mishandling of prescribed medications. Attentive and caring staff oversee the general well-being of the residents and help to maintain and/or improve their health status.  Financial support for this historic landmark and mission driven service is lacking. Donations are vital to Hannah Gray's continued legacy.
